Friends of Downtown Northfield Seeks Board Members & Volunteers

If you are interested in making downtown more vibrant, please come learn about volunteer and board member opportunities with our organization. We welcome everyone – whether you are a student or a downtown renter, just moved here or are a long-time resident, own a downtown business or just like to shop downtown. We have openings for short-term volunteers, long-term volunteers, and 3-year terms on our board of directors.

Join us for a casual gathering on Monday, August 29, 2022 at the Riverside Kitchen & Bar patio of the Fairfield Inn (114 2nd St W, Northfield, MN) from 5:30pm-7:00pm. Meet current board members, learn more about our mission, and explore opportunities for how you can help contribute to the vitality of downtown.

Bridge Square Block Party August 18, 2022

Join us in Bridge Square on Third Thursdays this summer for FREE and fun get-togethers. Our series continues on Thursday, August 18 from 5:00 -7:00 PM.

Bring your families and join your friends and neighbors with various games and activities in the Square. We’re excited to welcome local singer/songwriter Mark Ross, from the band Mark Ross & the Three-Nineteen (, for a solo acoustic set from 5:30 – 6:30. And you won’t want to miss Sadie’s Taste of Love food truck ( selling their renowned vegetarian and vegan soul food in the Square. Grab some food, take advantage of “Third Thursday” shopping deals, stroll along the riverfront, or just put out a blanket and enjoy celebrating summer in the Square.

Free Business Coaching Available for Minority Entrepreneurs through SMIF

Northfield entrepreneurs who identify as Black, Indigenous or People of Color (BIPOC), women, veterans, low-income persons, and/or persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply for free business coaching. The Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) is seeking entrepreneurs for their Prosperity Prosperity Initiative program.

According to SMIF’s website, “Prosperity Initiative clients commit to a six-month period of working directly with an experienced business coach for a total of 40 hours. Additionally, clients connect monthly with other entrepreneurs participating in the program through peer network meetings to discuss challenges and successes. All resources are free for participating businesses.

When the Prosperity Initiative was created in 2016, its mission was to help remove barriers to success for BIPOC entrepreneurs. This is the first year that the program has expanded its eligibility to also include entrepreneurs who identify as women, veterans, low-income and/or a person with disabilities. More than 80 clients have graduated from the program.

“We are excited to work with a new cohort of Prosperity Initiative businesses this fall,” said Pam Bishop, vice president of economic development. “This is a great opportunity to gain resources to support high-priority areas in your company.”

The Prosperity Initiative is supported, in part, by State of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Partners serving on the advisory committee include Community Economic Development Associates (CEDA)Collider FoundationHispanic Advocacy and Community Empowerment through Research (HACER)Region Nine Development CommissionMerchants Bank – WinonaMinnesota Council of Churches – Tapestry Project.

Customer Service Training Opportunity with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Lens

Northfield employees, managers, and residents are invited to a free customer service training. This is based on the results of a city-wide survey conducted by the Northfield Racial & Ethnic Equity Collaborative during the spring of 2022.

Gain insights from the survey results and practice skills that help create an inclusive and welcoming environment for your workplace or business.

Your presenter

Jim Langemo has been engaged in diversity-related work since 2004 and has been facilitating customer service training since the mid-1990s. He has worked with organizations across the United States and led award-winning diversity programs. He is currently the chief administrative officer at Hennepin Theatre Trust. His training on customer service with a diversity lens is focused on the customer experience, the employee experience, and an organization’s bottom line.

Su presentador

Enhancing Readiness for Business Succession

Are you part of the 60% of small business owners who were born between 1946-1964 who are nearing retirement? Do you have a plan for unexpected life transitions? Do you recognize the need for succession planning, but feel hindered by the cost, time and lack of resources?

The University of Minnesota Extension and VisionOne High Performance Group have collaborated to create a course that will help you prepare with a 10-week transition planning course, specifically designed for small businesses in rural Minnesota.

What will you gain by participating?

  • Build knowledge and ability to strengthen your business in preparation for a succession event.
  • Learn about resources in your community and how to leverage them.
  • Engage in an on-line learning community with other firms featuring five bi-monthly sessions including one 120-minute kickoff session and four 90-minute sessions to enhance your succession planning knowledge
  • In the alternating five weeks, business owner participants will meet in-person in their community with local economic development facilitators to apply their learning to your specific business.
  • By the end of the course, you will have drafted a formal, written succession plan that addresses and supports your most important business succession, personal wealth, and legacy desires and needs.

What is the commitment?

  • This program is ten weeks in length and will run from March-May 2020
  • Participate in the five on-line learning sessions – March 4, 18; April 1, 15, 29
  • Attend five local meetings in your community with other business owners and your economic development facilitator to complete the coursework for each session. Dates TBD.

What is the cost?

  • Because of a grant through the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation, your cost as a business owner is only $100.00 for the full 10-week course.
